Royal County Down

Green Fees From: £90

Royal County Down is located in one of the world’s most naturally beautiful links settings in the Murlough Nature Reserve. Against the magnificent backdrop of the Mountains of Mourne, the links stretches along the shores of Dundrum Bay, zigzagging back and forth to provide a different vista from virtually every hole.

“Royal County Down is a pure links, in the truest sense of the word. My advice to anyone playing this great course is to keep it very straight off the tee – stray from the fairways at your peril,It is a tremendous test of golf and the outward half especially is as fine a nine holes as I have ever played” TOM WATSON

Situated in Newcastle, where in the immortal words of Percy French, “The Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea”, Royal County Down is not only a fine test of golf but has accompanying scenery that is spellbinding.

Alongside the Championship Links, Royal County Down has a second course, The Annesley Links. Laid out beneath the same massive, almost menacing backdrop, the Annesley Links is nowhere near as intimidating or as formidable a challenge as the Championship Links, but then it was never intended to be.

It is a course for everyone.

Visting golfers are always given a very warm welcome at Royal County Down.

After your round, why not enjoy a drink in the Murlough Room, which has views of the 18th green, the 10th tee and the Mountains of Mourne. The bar and dining room offer visiting golfers the opportunity to relax in comfort after their round. A menu which includes both light snacks and more substantial meals, all freshly prepared, is available throughout the day, as is the fully licensed bar.

Harbour House Inn

Harbour House Inn

Enjoy a fantastic Golf Break at the Harbour House Inn.

Family run small hotel, 8 ensuite rooms, terrace dining with panoramic views of Dundrum Bay. Extensive menu including locally sourced fish & shellfish. Fully licenced bar & lounge including the newly added South Prom coffee shop & brew bar.

This accommodation is based on the South Promenade at Newcastle Harbour: The harbour is among the most richly historic areas of Newcastle. Home to many longstanding families, the area around the pier has a long association with the sea. The origins of the current harbour date back to the 1820’s, when a new pier was created by Lord Annesley to replace the old one. One of the chief functions of the pier was to act as a loading point for Mourne granite, which was quarried in the hills above the harbour. If you stand on the shorter arm of the pier and look up towards the mountain you can see a path cut through the trees leading to the now defunct quarry on Millstone Mountain. In the last century, stone was quarried here and dispatched down this track to the harbour by rail trucks. It was loaded on to ships (known as Stone Boats) and used to build docks in Belfast and Liverpool and the courthouse gaol in nearby Downpatrick.

The Harbour House Inn is also located in an outstanding spot to enjoy a Golf Break at Royal County Down.  This famous golf course is only a 5 minute drive from the accommodation.
