The MacKenzie Championship Course is arguably one of the best in the North East, if not in Scotland and was designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, the golf architect better known for designing Augusta National in America. The Course provides a true test of golf skills with gorse and woodland being a hazard for any wayward shots. Several well-known competitions are held here on a regular basis. Dr Alister MacKenzie, the creator of Augusta National and Cypress Point, this championship course parkland retains the architect’s basic design. Described as an “unforgiving test that rewards the brave”, the par 70 (6,209 yards) demands players become immersed in the challenge.
The Pines Course, originally a nine-hole course, it gained an extension in the early 1970’s which was designed by Ryder Cup players Hugget, Coles and Dyer. It has a more open aspect than MacKenzie and its beautiful setting is perhaps more suitable for higher handicap players. A little bit more forgiving than some of the other courses in Golf Aberdeen’s portfolio – particularly off the tee – the Pines is more open and was revamped in the early 1970s by Brian Huggett, Neil Coles and Roger Dyer. Described as a “fair test of golf”, you can bask in some great views of the city from the 12th tee and the green on the 17th. The Pines course offers a gentler challenge than its big sister the MacKenzie Championship course. It is shorter at 5735 yards Par 67 but most of its fairways are tree-lined and there is a good variety of holes with six par 3s and one par 5. The fairways are generous and the large greens inviting but watch out for the numerous bunkers well placed around the course.
The Nine Hole Course has wide fairways and a marked absence of rough, making it the perfect starting point for the enthusiastic beginner. The best known hole on this course is the Sahara, the only desert with grass which is a massive 503 yards, par 5. This course is ideal for golfers with less time on their hands.
