Widely regarded as one of the finest golf courses in Yorkshire, Fulford Golf Club has earned an outstanding reputation as one of Britain’s premier inland championship venues. Located just one mile from the historic centre of York, the club combines exceptional golf with one of England’s most popular city break destinations, making it an ideal choice for golfers planning a memorable York golf break.
Set within a beautiful heathland and woodland landscape, the course offers a challenging yet highly enjoyable test of golf. Immaculate fairways, strategically placed bunkers, mature trees and superbly maintained greens demand accuracy and thoughtful course management, rewarding golfers of all abilities.
Fulford’s place in golfing history is firmly established. During the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, the club hosted 23 consecutive European Tour events, attracting many of the world’s finest players and placing the course firmly on the international golfing map. It was also the venue for the inaugural Women’s British Open Championship in 1976 and has welcomed numerous prestigious amateur and professional championships throughout its history.
Perhaps the club’s most famous moment came during the 1981 Benson & Hedges International Open, when future Masters Champion Bernhard Langer produced one of golf’s most memorable recovery shots by climbing the famous ash tree beside the 17th green to play his approach. The remarkable shot remains one of the most talked-about moments in European Tour history.
Founded in 1906, Fulford Golf Club relocated to its present site in 1935 after former Open Champion James Braid confirmed the suitability of the land. The championship course was designed by Major Charles Mackenzie, brother and business partner of the legendary Dr Alister MacKenzie, whose famous designs include Augusta National and Cypress Point. This rich architectural heritage is reflected throughout the course and contributes to Fulford’s enduring reputation.
Golfers visiting Fulford are perfectly placed to enjoy everything the historic city of York has to offer. Just a short distance from the course, visitors can explore York Minster, the medieval city walls, independent shops, restaurants and cultural attractions, making the area an excellent destination for both golfers and non-golfers alike.
For those planning a golf break, The Plough Inn in nearby Fulford provides comfortable boutique accommodation, traditional Yorkshire hospitality and excellent food just minutes from the course. Together, Fulford Golf Club and The Plough Inn create the perfect combination for an unforgettable golfing getaway in one of Yorkshire’s most historic and enjoyable destinations.
